FAO is currently implementing a Fish Marketing Information project to support the development of conducive and fair trade practices for economically competitive fish products from NAD in the local, national, regional and international markets.

How?

Establishment of a transparent Fish Marketing Information System:

• Data collectors in key markets in NAD, North Sumatra and overseas (e.g. Malaysia , Singapore , Japan ) collect fish price information
• The information is processed by a computer-based system (with website, SMS gateway and data bank)
• The price information is disseminated to fishers, fish farmers, traders, processors, government agencies by SMS, email, radio and print media

Capacity-building in the collection and interpretation of fish market information:

• Data Collection
• Workshop Fish Marketing Information System
• launch workshop Marketing Capacity Building Training

Trade promotion :

• Buyer-Seller Meetings between traders from NAD and from Malaysia
• Market news, international fish prices and trade directory on the Fish Marketing Information System website in collaboration with INFOFISH, an intergovernmental organization providing marketing information and technical advisory services to the fishery industry of the Asia-Pacific region
• Establishment of Pilot Fish Marketing Community Groups

• Fishers, fish farmers: increased transparency of fish prices increases bargaining power
• Traders, processors: better access to timely and accurate market information reduces transaction costs and supports business decisions
• Government: better understanding of market dynamics supports public trade development planning

• Capacity building and trade promotion: Banda Aceh, West Coast, East Coast , Malaysia
