The government of New Zealand has released Fisheries 2030, a goal and plan of action for future management of the country's fisheries. The goal is to maximise benefits from the use of fisheries within environmental limits. Recent international research places New Zealand in the top two marine areas in the world in terms of the way the fisheries are managed. The 2030 fisheries goal is focused on enabling tangata whenua (the indigenous people) and the stake holders to derive maximum benefit from the variety of sustainable uses of fisheries. The strategy is aimed at creating economic value and reducing the costs while maintaining the capacity and the integrity of the aquatic environment and habitats and ensuring that species are maintained at sustainable levels. The action plan is focused on seven areas such as improving the management frame work, ensuring sustainability of fish stocks, improving the fish information system, supporting aquaculture development objectives, building leadership and capacity, meeting the obligations to the Maori, and enabling collective management responsibility. The plan brings existing and future work programmes together, providing overall directions and enabling the government and the fisheries sector to improve productivity and achieve better fisheries management.
