As part of the trend in developing environment friendly business, transferring goods from road to rail transport is a key aspect of Norway Post's environmental strategy. The Norway Post has transferred goods that would fill approximately 2 000 semitrailers each month over to rail transport. With this, the Norway Post has achieved a reduction of 1.5 million kilometres in the distance driven and lowered CO2 emissions by 1.3 million kilograms a month. For the first time, it is now possible to transfer the transport of fresh, quality goods between Norway and Europe by trains. This means of transport is quick and certain, factors which are crucial for fresh salmon in that even one hour's delay can destroy the end product. The train leaves from Alnabru in Oslo each Saturday and returns from Rotterdam each Wednesday. It would replace 32 trailers on the road each way. In the space of one year, this will mean 4 million fewer kilometres driven and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 4 000 mt. The goal is to increase the capacity to Europe to three weekly trains by the end of 2010. The return train will, among other things, carry 150 mt of fruit and vegetables. The train will also transport ordinary railway goods, including returned packaging to Germany for recycling. Transporting both temperature-controlled fresh goods and ordinary goods on the same train is one of the main reasons why the line can be operated at a profit.
