A professor at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in southern Taiwan has won the 2009 prize in agricultural sciences presented by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). Yang Hui-Iang won the prize for outstanding achievements in the research and development of immunology, oral vaccines and prevention of viral infections in grouper aquaculture. TWAS is an international organization based in Trieste, Italy, that promotes scientific excellence for sustainable development in developing countries around the world. The TWAS prizes are awarded to individual scientists in developing countries in recognition of their outstanding contributions to knowledge in eight fields of science (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, agricultural sciences, earth sciences, engineering sciences and medical sciences). Yang began to research aquaculture¬-related biomedical technology 10 years ago after witnessing the disease problems facing local aquaculturists. He said that they started from scratch with the NCKU organising a research team and establishing a laboratory and an experimental pond for development of biomedical technology for aquatic disease prevention, particularly in grouper breeding. Yang will receive the TWAS award at the organisation's conference slated for early 2010. He will receive a cash prize of US$15 000.
