Vertically integrated Epax, the leading omega-3 oil supplier was awarded Friend of the Sea (FoS) certification for its sustainable marine sourcing and production methods. The company will soon offer its omega-3 oils as having a documented and traceable origin from sustainable fisheries, from fish harvesting in Peru to the finished omega-3 products in Norway.

The concept of purity and total quality in omega-3 oils goes beyond measuring for pollutants only and also includes oxidation and trans-fatty acids in parameters. Oxidation forms free radicals which can damage human cells and has been implicated in many of today's chronic diseases. Oxidation products are not inherently present in fish oil, but are formed if the oil is handled incorrectly. Sourcing of high quality raw materials as well as human expertise and using a manufacturing process that minimises exposure of the oil to heat and air ensure low levels. Low oxidative parameters also ensure a long shelf life and are safe for long-term human consumption. Omega-3 fish oils are naturally unstable when exposed to oxygen, high temperatures and light. The addition of antioxidants is required for added protection during production, storage and any subsequent processing.
