Canada — Technology developed to replace open-net salmon farms in British Columbia has been purchased by China. The technology, developed over seven years by Agrimarine Industries to replace conventional net fish enclosures with buoyant fibreglass tanks, will be used at a trout hatchery in a hydro reservoir in Liang province. The technology was originally designed for a salmon farm project in Middle Bay under a partnership with the Middle Bay Sustainable Aquaculture Institute with funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Sustainable Development Technology Canada. Difficulty in getting further funding to build more tanks and a lengthy licensing process in British Columbia prevented the project from progressing further. In China, Agrimarine found not only an investor willing to put up money for the first few tanks, but also lower labour costs and a welcoming government. The company’s move to China followed a recommendation by a government-appointed panel in February that the province implement a commercial-scale trial of a closed containment system for farmed salmon in order to help protect wild salmon from infectious diseases.
