In effort to establish a direct sea cargo link and improve seafood trade between Aceh (Indonesia) and Malaysia, a one-day workshop was held in Idi, Eastern district of Aceh on 2 June, 2010. The workshop discussed the findings of a sea-link study carried out by a group of researchers from the University of Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh. Both the study and the workshop were funded by the UN-FAO’s project on Fish Marketing Information for Aceh (GCP/INS/078/SPA) and it was part of the project’s activities to facilitate trade (export) of fisheries products from Aceh to regional markets particularly to Malaysia. The workshop was attended by around 50 representatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) Jakarta, local fisheries agency (DKP) and relevant government agencies in Aceh, cargo operators, fish traders, fishing port authority, FAO representative in Indonesia and the project’s consultants. Four representatives from the Fishermen Association of Perak, Malaysia (Penggerak) also participated at the workshop.
