A one-day national workshop on Fish Marketing Information System (FMIS) was held in Banda Aceh, the capital city of Aceh Province, Indonesia on 23 February 2010. The workshop was jointly officiated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation Representative in Indonesia, Mr. Man Ho So, the Director of International Fish Marketing Development of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), Mr Saut Hutagalung and the Head of Marine and Fisheries Department of Aceh Province, Mr Razali A R. The participants, numbering over 70, were mainly fisheries officers from MMAF, Jakarta and from 18 districts in Aceh as well as representatives of Marine and Fisheries Department (DKP) from 10 provinces in Indonesia. The workshop was organised by the Spanish Government-funded FAO Fish Marketing Information project in Aceh which has been in progress since mid-2008 and is scheduled to be completed by July this year. The project has three main components, namely the establishment of FMIS to create transparent and fair fish trading; a trade facilitation programme to improve market access for Aceh fish products in the regional markets; and capacity building to improve the skill of stakeholders on fish marketing and processing. The FMIS provides web-based (on-line) and Short Messaging Service (SMS) fish market information for stakeholders in Aceh. The main objectives of the workshop were to promote FMIS developed by the project to the Fisheries Department in other provinces and to ensure a smooth transfer of the system to MMAF once the project is completed. Having learned about the simple but effective FMIS system, other provinces in Indonesia are very keen to duplicate the system and MMAF is seriously considering developing a similar system at the national level. In addition to the presentations on the project activities, the workshop also included presentations on the trends and prospects of global seafood trade and the FISHINFO Network by Mrs Fatima Ferdouse of INFOFISH and value chain analysis by Mr Erik Hempel, an international consultant of the project. Extensive discussions were focused on how to make the system (FMIS) sustainable after the project is completed. The extensive experience of the FISHINFO Network in developing sustainable fish marketing information systems was a real eye opener for the participants and the Indonesian government. Follow-up discussions with the MMAF will be held in the near future to establish a road map for the smooth handing over of the FMIS to the Indonesian government. The project is also willing to assist MMAF in the possible expansion of the FMIS to other provinces and at the national level.
